Separate the service period from the document date.

The work may cover a different period from the day its invoice is prepared.

01

Start with the evidence

Identify when the work was provided and when the document is being created. Do not use a copied invoice date as a substitute for checking the actual service period in the supporting record.

02

Work through the example

A document prepared on 3 October can describe September work. Showing both the document date and “1–30 September” avoids leaving the reader to infer the period from the month in an invoice number.

03

Make the next step clear

Keep those dates consistent with the source and explain any revised period to the reviewer. Questions about the accounting period or recognition belong in the review notes; changing a label alone does not resolve them.

04

Keep the source context

Treat an invoice draft as a description of an agreed business event. Keep the source agreement nearby and distinguish document preparation from approval, sending and receiving payment. These are separate steps even when they happen close together.
